Changes in the new regulation on fertilizers and biostimulants in Chile

In a presentation with Redagrícola, expert Romina Almasia explained that the law replaces the concept of biofertilizer with that of biostimulant and that there will be a Single National Registry for the process.

Good crop health is essential to avoid pests and diseases that could reduce future production. Sustainable agriculture is an increasingly popular practice worldwide and the use of bioinputs is presented as a clean alternative to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. The fast growth of this market in recent years has led to more attention being paid to regulations on its use.

This has been highlighted by the war between Russia, one of the world's largest fertilizer producers, and Ukraine, making biostimulants and biocontrols more prominent than ever.

In this context and as part of Redagrícola's 3rd Online Series on Biostimulants and Biocontrol, the director and vice-president of the Chilean Bioinputs Network, MSc. Romina Almasia, presented the talk "New bioinputs regulations in Chile", provided for in Law 21.349 on composition, labeling and marketing of fertilizers and biostimulants, which came into force on September 27.

In it, she explained that the new regulation of the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) for the use of fertilizers includes the concept of biostimulant, eliminating that of biofertilizer, and establishes provisions on quality parameters, composition, packaging and labeling, among others. In addition, there is now a Single National Register in which all those involved in the process of creating fertilizers and biostimulants must register.

The expert indicated that the classification of a bio-input will be given by its intended use, and the regulations include two major classifications in this area: plant improvers, which mainly include biostimulants and inoculants, and preparations that function as a sanitary defense for crops, such as natural pesticides or bio-controllers.
